Not so well known to the general reader is the context that surrounded the expedition. Louis to the Pacific Ocean and back in 1804-06 remains one of the most enthralling adventure stories in American history. Even in this high-tech age of space exploration, their bold, 28-month, 8,000-mile expedition across largely unknown Western lands from Young partners, courageous and self-reliant, they were role models for generations of American youths. Or almost 200 years, the explorers Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838) have stood among the first ranks in the pantheon of American heroes. Typically, reading BNW elicits the very same disturbing feelings in the reader which the society it depicts has notionally vanquished - not a sense of joyful anticipation. This is because Huxley endows his "ideal" society with features calculated to alienate his audience. So how does Huxley turn a future where we're all notionally happy into the archetypal dystopia? If it's technically feasible, what's wrong with using biotechnology to get rid of mental pain altogether?īrave New World is an unsettling, loveless and even sinister place. Yet the knee-jerk response of "It's Brave New World!" to any blueprint for chemically-driven happiness has delayed research into paradise-engineering for all sentient life. Hence to treat his masterpiece as ill-conceived futurology rather than a work of great literature might seem to miss the point. Brave New World has come to serve as the false symbol for any regime of universal happiness.įor sure, Huxley was writing a satirical piece of fiction, not scientific prophecy. Aldous Huxley : Brave New World BRAVE NEW WORLD ?īrave New World (1932) is one of the most bewitching and insidious works of literature ever written. 7/6/2023 0 Comments When you trap a tigerThank you, Tae Keller, for this remarkable book. I saw them as the latter as they were dying, but this book showed me their bravery in a whole new light. My mom & grama were complicated: fierce, brave women, but also often scared and closed off. As Keller writes (and I paraphrase): the sadness may lessen, but the missing never does. This book made me want to read more about Korea so that its “single story” - in my brain, at least - doesn’t come from a 70s TV show.Īs for the mirror, I lost my grama 3 years ago this month, and my sweet mom almost exactly a year later. I loved hearing the stories of the gods and myths of Korean folklore, and of the quiet inner strength of the Korean women. I know very little about Korean culture, and nothing about the folktales within. But when a book acts as a window and a mirror (Sims Bishop, 1990) simultaneously, well, that’s something quite special. Sure, I could describe When You Trap a Tiger as MG magical realism. Or it might help heal a part of you that is broken. It might show you the world in a new way. You never know what a book will truly be for you until you read it. I was in a bit of a reading slump when this book came to me from the publisher via a member of my reading group. Their search for a place to be who they want to be is an exhilarating, painful, magical adventure.Īt the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied. Living in a system stacked against them, Redwood and Aidan's power and talent are torment and joy. The power of hoodoo is the power of the community that believes in its capacities to heal. Redwood, an African American woman, and Aidan, a Seminole Irish man, journey from Georgia to Chicago, from haunted swampland to a "city of the future." They are gifted performers and hoodoo conjurors, struggling to call up the wondrous world they imagine, not just on stage and screen, but on city streets, in front parlors, in wounded hearts. Hunkering together in dark theatres, diverse audiences marvel at flickering images. Nelson, the new prison governor, thought that writing might be more cathartic than prison labour. Contact had lapsed between Douglas and Wilde and the latter had suffered from his close supervision, physical labour, and emotional isolation. Wilde wrote the letter between January and March 1897, close to the end of his imprisonment. The letter begins "Dear Bosie" and ends "Your Affectionate Friend". In the second half, Wilde charts his spiritual development in prison and identification with Jesus Christ, whom he characterises as a romantic, individualist artist. He indicts both Lord Alfred's vanity and his own weakness in acceding to those wishes. In its first half, Wilde recounts their previous relationship and extravagant lifestyle which eventually led to Wilde's conviction and imprisonment for gross indecency. De Profundis (Latin: "from the depths") is a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his imprisonment in Reading Gaol, to "Bosie" ( Lord Alfred Douglas). 7/5/2023 0 Comments Darkest Mercy by Melissa MarrNiall having reacted badly after Irial's death takes that as betrayal for not warning him that Irial would be murdered. Having him caged and in a particular occasion burning his face close to his eye, all because Seth confesses he can see the future. Which caused my shock at the way Niall treated Seth in this book. Until I read this book I thought Niall and Seth's friendship would remain the same. Seth leaves his "mother" Sorcha in order to help Niall who is mourning Irial's death (caused by Bananach). Now the fifth one comes and I had high hopes of Aislinn and Seth actually being together as a real couple.īasically this book centers on the Dark, Winter, and Summer courts preparing themselves to face Bananach (War) in a battle for peace after War stirs trouble within aforementioned courts. Seth was involved more with Sorcha and Niall rather then Aislinn. Skipped four for the same reason as I did two. I was dissapointed by the lack of moments they had together. The reason I got into this series was Seth and Aislinn's chemistry and romantic tension in the first Wicked Lovely book. So I skipped book two due to their lack of involvement and appearances in it, all the way to the third. After enjoying reading books one and three (have yet to read books two and four), this fifth and final installment to the Wicked Lovely series by Melissa Marr so far is my second favorite. Around noon this Friday I finished reading Darkest Mercy. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Defy the Stars by Claudia GrayIn the end, their friendship and interactions are so pure and lovely that it hurt to say goodbye to them for the moment while I wait for the sequel to come out. They begin on different sides, but slowly begin to lean on each other in order to survive and protect what they love. Noemi is a soldier set on protecting her planet from Earth while Abel is a mech with developing human emotions. This unlikely enemy duo made me laugh so hard and overall feel extremely happy while in their company. The characters are indeed my favorite aspect of Defy the Stars and you are completely missing out if you haven't met Noemi and Abel yet. The book became my own spaceship and it was a joy to ride alongside the main characters, Noemi and Abel. I could almost touch the stars, meteors, black holes, and gates to enter different galaxies. It's almost unbelievable how quickly I was drawn towards the different worlds and their fights for survival against the domineering, dying Earth. Defy the Stars is electrifying and one epic space adventure!Ĭlaudia Gray is hands down one of the best at world-building (or is it space-exploring?) and storytelling. Easily one of my favorite reads of 2017! Science Fiction is not usually my go-to genre, but I decided to pick this one up since author Claudia Gray is one of the first YA authors I read as a teen so I obviously had to give it a try. 7/4/2023 0 Comments Forbidden tabithaWhether you're looking to stock up on outdoor furniture, games or entertaining must-have's, this is the drop to shop before everything sells out.Īhead, find some of our favorite Tabitha-approved Target picks to make this year's summer days and nights your most memorable yet. Kind of young, but mature enough for some hot man on man action. He’s so easy to listen to and I think this hits his “age level” spot on. (I won’t say but it involves the Coach in a very bad way and Jeremy makes some decisions that are really hard to witness.) At the end we get a very satisfying HEA and our MCs manage to bring the bad guy to justice! (I loved the whole Batman/Robin switcheroo underwear thing – very clever!) Audio Well I just love Chris Patton so I loved the hell out of this narration. The second part is where (for me) it got a bit too dramatic at times, though I appreciated the overall statements that get made and the end result. The first part of the book is their push-pull of attraction, the second part is dealing with the aftermath. Jeremy is the new guy, super attracted and attractive to Becks, but having to fight against the fear of outing. Beck’s is gay but closeted, doesn’t want to lose his wrestling scholarship. There is a lot of sex in this – so I think for groupings New Adult is more appropriate, but the angst and drama and sometimes over-the-topness sometimes felt more Young Adult. This is a complex YA/NA story about two wrestlers finding love in a sport that is fairly homophobic, but in this case their coach is dangerously homophobic. Angsty college wrestlers with great narration |
